Bakfiets

Since summer 2011, Squat Deluxe founder Wahid El-Sohl develops a “bakfiets” with batteries and an inverter capable of running a small sound system for around the 7 hours.

The “bakfiets” was made for rehearsing. In fact, we got many big names (DJs and Bands) playing on the system and it allowed many people to come and experiment with their (new) sound. It’s a perfect platform for musicians and DJs to interact and try new stuff.

De Fabriek project

November 6, 2007

de-fffff.gif

14Th of February 2008, Deelgemeente Delfshaven forced us to leave the building, saying that the building is too dangerous to be in! We moved to another building on the Hendrick de Keyzerstraat 60 where we intend to continue our concept with the all our cultural arty activities.

For more information download our booklet
Model of de Fabriek cultural centre.pdf

or check up the new fabriek website www.defabriek.nu

Concept:
To create an independent CULTURAL and SOCIAL ARTY CENTER in Delfshaven in west Rotterdam. Indipendent in this case means, that our activities are purely result to our own ideas, initiative and action. We are not being financed by an external institution, and this way we keep the freedom of choosing what to organise, and whom to support. The events that happen inside our walls, serve the underground cultural and art scene of the city, as well as the people involved.

Location:
The building is an old factory. It had stayed empty for 6 years before we arrived, and was severely damaged. Roof had been partly destroyed, and water was coming in from everywhere. A groupe of junkies and criminals were using the building as a shelter, because the police or the fire departement could not come in to the building that was considered too dangerous to enter. The block of the factory occupies a remarkable part of the street, and it’s bad situation had a direct influence on the whole neighborhood serving as a spot of drug dealing and prostitution.
After squatting the space we found out that it was already functional in the way we wanted it to be, and that it had a interesting story behind. The building had been squatted before, but the previous group had been thrown out and the building was left to deteriorate so that other squatters would not invade it again.
There is a movie made by Jup de Heer about this subject, take twenty minutes to watch it and it is really worth while, clik on link and afterward on video

What happened:
We started by squating the building and working on it making it safe and usable again,
We installed new electric installation that would cover the whole building, as well as water, sewage and toilets. We have repaired more than 250 small windows that were broken. We have rapaired big areas on the roofs, and built wooden walls inside in order to create separate ateliers spaces. All that was made by using recycled material given by some bigger organizations in Rotterdam, and by investing 30000€ (until now) all initiated from stichting “de Fabriek”.
The project has been planned and leaded by Squat Deluxe, and executed by the manpower of the stichting “de fabriek + some volountary extra help.

We could already achieve the following:
We have already 7 ateliers,
12 artists using the ateliers
1 band rehersal space monacostudio.grouphub.com
9 persons living
1 audiorental company(squatdeluxe)
2 halls for public use(art exhebition-party-cinema-and other)

Still to come
Big hall for movie production, and photo shoots
Dormitory for hosting “Artists in residency” coming to Rotterdam
